Sustainable Design Series:
Natural Dyeing for Yarns

This 2 day workshop introduces the principles of working with natural dyes while dyeing small skeins of woollen yarns for use in small knitting projects or embroidery. Experimentation with different types of mordants, colour modifiers and over dyeing will be explored to produce a wide range of hues and tones in beautiful natural colours. Open to all levels of experience.

Thea Haines is a textile designer, artist, curator and natural colour consultant. She recently completed an MA in Textile design from Chelsea College of Art and Design, in London, UK. She previously studied Textile Design at Sheridan College in Oakville, Canada and holds BA Honours in Art and Comparative Literature from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. She was artist-in-residence in the Craft Studio at Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, Canada from 2006-2009 and a member of the Contemporary Textile Studio Co-operative at 401 Richmond in Toronto from 2009-2011. Her recent natural dye research makes the case for natural dyes as sustainable alternative to chemical dyes in craft production of printed and dyed textiles.
