This workshop will introduce traditional cloth weaving techniques within a contemporary, materials based context. Students will work on pre-warped Ashford rigid heddle looms to create a textured multi-functional cloth. With a grounding in simple plain woven structures, the inherent qualities of natural fibres such as silk, cotton, wool and linen will determine the nature of each individual piece. Materiality will determine outcomes and an opportunity to explore chance and asymmetry will be offered. No previous weaving experience is required. Students will enjoy the stunning natural materials and the process of transforming them from thread into cloth. A small class size allows plenty of one on one time to make sure everyone completes their piece. Amanda Wood is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver BC. She explores chance, pattern and networks in three-dimensional line drawings. Amanda uses natural materials and traditional weaving techniques to create structures that exist in between art and craft.
