November 4 + 5

Instructor: Tamara Rubilar

Materials Fee: $25 (paid to Instructor)
Students: 12

In this workshop, the students create a personal piece as an abstract embroidery composition, exploring textures, volumes, and 3D effects. We learn different stitches, using the ideas of accumulation, superposition, repetition, filling shapes and transparency, working with a variety of materials such as beads, sequins, ribbons, fabric, and all kinds of threads, cords and metallics.

This class focuses on the personal creative potential and ability of the student to create an embroidered abstract piece, and it initiates the participants to the creative process I use in my own work: how to work with an inspiration mood board, how to choose materials and colour palette, and how to use stitches to create a 3D surface with different textures. Students are encouraged to explore and play with materials and stitches. At the end everybody gets a very personal and different result.

Graduating from the Montreal Center for contemporary textiles in 2014 is where Tamara fell in love with art embroidery. She decided to go  and train in Europe, at the renowned Ecole Lesage Paris, and the Royal School of Needlework in London. In 2017, she moved to Spain, and studied Spanish embroidery techniques; training at Fermin (a famous bullfighters’ bespoke tailor shop in Madrid), as well as traditional religious gold work in Sevilla.  In addition, she collaborated with fashion designers in Madrid.

Throughout Tamara’s career, she participated in exhibitions in Montreal, France and Spain. Some of her commissions and collaborations include Cirque du Soleil, Disney, Antonio Ortega haute couture and collaboration with visual artists.

In 2019, she founded Studio Textile Montreal; where she offers professional embroidery workshops, produce custom orders for clients, and develop personal work. She also teaches at the Montreal Center for contemporary textiles, and gives workshops in Montreal Museums and cultural centers.
