Experimental 3D Embroidery
with Tamara Rubilar

In this workshop, the students create a personal piece as an abstract embroidery composition, exploring textures, volumes, and 3D effects. We learn different stitches, using the ideas of accumulation, superposition, repetition, filling shapes and transparency, working with a variety of materials such as beads, sequins, ribbons, fabric, and all kinds of threads, cords and metallics.

This class focuses on the personal creative potential and ability of the student to create an embroidered abstract piece, and it initiates the participants to the creative process I use in my own work: how to work with an inspiration mood board, how to choose materials and colour palette, and how to use stitches to create a 3D surface with different textures. Students are encouraged to explore and play with materials and stitches. At the end everybody gets a very personal and different result.

In this workshop led by embroidery specialist Rafia Shafiq, students learn about Phulkari, a traditional geometric stitch technique from Pakistan and India. Each student leaves the workshop with a beautiful Phulkari embroidery, updated through their own choice of a modern colour palette. They also learn about the history, origin, stories and different connotations of Phulkari embroidery through Rafia's own journey and research, viewing her journals and outstanding embroidery collection.

A contemplative, three-week journey of explorations in dyeing, hand-piecing and stitching, as well as opportunities for self-reflection and mindful practice. Working in community, participants are given the opportunity to create a narrative cloth that can be further transformed into a stitch journal or left as an artwork.

A one-day workshop where students explore the essence of a plant by creating a botanical artwork using screen printing and embroidery techniques. In the morning, we walk through the basics of screen printing to create a design on fabric for further image-making. Students are encouraged to bring their own leaf or flower specimens for this purpose but there will also be a selection of items to choose from. The afternoon is spent working with this image to create details and embellishments using simple embroidery stitches and other hand work, like beading.
