Experimental Weaving: Texture and Dimensionality Design
Saturday April 26
10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Instructor: Shao-Chi Lin
Materials Fee: $25 (paid directly to the Instructor)
Students: 8
Participants will learn how truly versatile and experimental weaving can be! This workshop will be an excellent launch point for ongoing independent creative explorations working with a loom.
In this workshop, participants will learn how to select the appropriate weaving techniques and materials that will lead to the desired texture and
dimensionality for their finished woven work
Using a frame loom, we will first provide an overview of the techniques of frame weaving and the 2D and 3D structural possibilities. The first half of the workshop, we will cover weaving techniques including tabby, twill, rya knot, rya loop, and sinna knot. Participants will become familiar with each of the techniques and their textural effect through sampling. The second half of the
workshop consists of planning and executing your own weavings based on the samples you created.
Participants will explore different materials (paper, cotton, linen and wool yarn) and discover their characteristics through the weaving process. The combinations of different techniques and materials can create a range of effects from bold accentuated to subtle delicate textures, and anything in between for both 2D and 3D structures. The possibilities are boundless, design elements such as patterns, scale, colour, texture, composition, dimensionality, can all be adjusted through the choice of techniques and material manipulation.
All skill levels are welcome!
Participants should bring: scissors, notebook, and pencil/pen.

Shao-Chi Lin is a Toronto-based fiber artist from Taiwan, and holds an MFA in Textiles from the Parsons School of Design. Lin transcends the structural limitations in weaving, exploring the possibilities of iterative events and patterns through woven structures. Guided by intuition and yet balanced with methodical discipline, her sculptures are meticulously crafted with woven textiles using paper yarn and natural dyes. She has exhibited in various cities in North America and Asia.
