Midsummer Flower Pounding on Cloth
Saturday July 27
Saturday August 10
11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Instructor: Lizz Aston
Materials Fee: $30 (paid to Instructor)
Students: 8
Learn how to create beautiful botanical monoprints on paper and cloth using a little bit of elbow grease, noise and fun! :)
Flower pounding, or hammer printing is a direct printing method that involves pounding fresh botanical materials to create one-off prints. In the workshop we will explore a range of techniques for creating crisp floral monoprints on paper and cloth. Participants will learn how to prep fabrics to make them more colour-fast when working with non-natural dye materials, and post mordant dips to strengthen and shift the colours. We will discuss how to wash and care for printed fabrics and explore additional surface design possibilities such as stitch and embroidery to further emphasize the prints. The workshop will begin with a presentation, material samples, tips and techniques to get started. In addition to fresh plant materials supplied, participants are welcome to bring their own floral and botanical materials from the garden to work with. All skill levels are welcome!
